What began as an adventurous hike through the rugged New Mexico landscape became an exhausting ordeal for one very large dog and an unforgettable rescue for the deputies who came to his aid. Atlas, a nearly 130 pound dog, had made his way along a challenging mountain trail, but eventually his energy disappeared and his body simply could not carry him any farther. With the return journey still ahead, Atlas needed more than encouragement and a little rest. He needed a team willing to climb up the mountain and help bring him safely back down.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office shared details of the unusual rescue after Atlas became too exhausted to complete the difficult hike. Open Space deputies responded by heading up the rough trail to reach the tired dog and figure out the safest way to get him off the mountain.
Atlas was a particularly challenging rescue because of his size. At nearly 130 pounds, carrying him across steep and uneven terrain required strength, patience, and teamwork. Still, the deputies were determined to make sure he did not have to struggle through another step on his own.
A Five-Hour Journey Back to Safety
The rescue stretched across roughly four miles and took nearly five hours to complete. Along the way, team members took turns carrying Atlas on their backs and shoulders as they carefully navigated the rugged trail.
Photos shared by the sheriff’s office captured the extraordinary effort. Atlas can be seen resting across rescuers and their backpacks, allowing the exhausted dog to conserve his remaining energy while the team handled the difficult descent.
For Atlas, the long hike was finally over. Instead of forcing his tired body to continue, he could simply rest while the people around him worked together to bring him home.
As the rescue progressed, deputies eventually transferred Atlas into a Stokes basket. The specialized rescue equipment works much like a stretcher and allows teams to stabilize and transport someone through terrain where an ordinary stretcher would be difficult to use.
With Atlas secured inside, rescuers carefully maneuvered the large dog farther down the trail. Every mile required coordination, especially while moving such a heavy passenger through an environment filled with uneven ground and difficult footing.
After hours of effort, Atlas and his rescuers finally reached safety. The sheriff’s office celebrated their unusual four-legged passenger by affectionately calling him “the goodest boy we have ever rescued.”
The lighthearted title was a fitting conclusion to a demanding rescue. Atlas may not have been able to finish the hike himself, but he was surrounded by people willing to shoulder the burden when he needed them most.
The experience also offered an important reminder about hiking with pets. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office encouraged hikers to carry plenty of water, pay attention to signs of exhaustion, and remember that reaching the top is only part of the journey.
Dogs can be enthusiastic companions on outdoor adventures, but difficult terrain, distance, and physical exertion can take a toll. Planning for the return trip and watching a dog’s energy along the way can help prevent an enjoyable outing from becoming overwhelming.
For Atlas, an exhausting day on the mountain ended safely thanks to a team effort that lasted nearly five hours. He went from being too tired to continue to getting one of the most memorable rides down the mountain imaginable, proving that sometimes even the biggest dogs need someone to carry them home.
