Nobody asked Pillu to come. Nobody pinned a bib on her. She just fell in with a group of runners near her home in Kanpur and decided that 38 kilometres seemed like a reasonable distance for a morning run.
A video of Pillu running alongside a long-distance group, posted by Indian badminton player Prathamm Singh on his Instagram account @itszzprathamm, went viral this week and the internet has been losing its mind over it ever since. The nickname Pillu Goggins, a nod to ultramarathon runner and retired Navy SEAL David Goggins, has taken on a life of its own.
What Actually Happened
Prathamm and his running group were doing a 43-km training run near his home in Kanpur. Pillu, a stray dog who lives in the area, spotted the group at the start and simply joined in.
She did not stop at the first kilometre, or the fifth, or the half-marathon mark. As Prathamm noted in the caption of the video, she started with the group near his home, stayed with them for almost 38 kilometres, and finished back at the same spot.
“Guys usne humare saath start kiya hai, mere ghar ke paas hi rehti hai, aur mere ghar par hi finish kiya,” Prathamm said in the video. She started with them, she lives near his home, and she finished at his home. No drama. No fanfare. She just ran.
The runners made sure she was looked after throughout. Whenever the group stopped, they offered Pillu water and gave her time to rest before picking up again. Prathamm described her as a “silent inspiration” to everyone running that day.
What the Internet Did With It
The video spread fast. Comments piled in from people who found the whole thing both hilarious and genuinely moving. Others called for her to be adopted. Many just wanted the world to know that Pillu Goggins existed.
“Pillu Goggins, make her viral,” Prathamm wrote in his caption. The internet obliged.
The name itself is doing a lot of work. David Goggins built his public identity around one idea: no excuses, no stopping, no matter what. Pillu, a stray dog from Kanpur who decided that 38 kilometres of voluntary running sounded like a perfectly good way to spend a morning, fits that energy without having read a single word of his book.
She Is Not the First Dog to Do This
Dogs joining long-distance runners is more documented than most people realise. Gobi, a stray dog who attached herself to runner Dion Leonard during a 250-kilometre desert race across the Gobi in 2016 and ran 77 miles alongside him, became famous enough to get a book written about her. Stories of strays falling in with ultramarathon groups and refusing to turn back are a recurring feature of the sport.
What makes Pillu stand out is the combination of distance, and the telling geographic detail: she started and ended the run at Prathamm’s home. She lives near him. She has probably watched him leave for runs before. On this particular morning, she apparently decided she was going too, stayed for 38 kilometres, and came home when it was done.
She did not need a race entry. She did not need to be invited. She just ran.
